His work is modernist in a style that mixes fantasy and surrealism which in The Metamorphosis his main character transforms into a cockroach-like insect.
The themes in his work cover father–son conflicts, alienation. physical and psychological brutality, characters on a terrifying quest, mystical transformation, alienation, existential anxiety, guilt, and absurdity. His name has been taken into English to describe surreal situations as 'Kafkaesque'.
