World’s most peaceful nation?

Yes really it is NEW ZEALAND.

I wonder what criteria they used – not declaring war on anyone, or maybe not invading, only joining other peoples wars but not Iraq. No armed forces to speak of , and the few we have need to borrow equipment from other nations. The peacekeeping force sent to East Timor had to get a lift with Australia. No civil wars – well not for a few years, no internal unrest (ish), no terrorists bombing the place. Actually the no terrorist bombing the place is probably because the airfares are too expensive and flights take too long.

So although we live in a country where there Once Were Warriors – some still reenact the movie in domestic situations, gangs still roam the streets of Christchurch and Auckland, and a man beats another to death on the motorway with a hammer – we can still pat ourselves on the back about how peaceful we are!

90 World Peace March
begins in Wellington today – 2nd October
